A cluster of startups began operating pilot lines this quarter aimed at making solid-state battery cells cost-competitive with conventional lithium-ion chemistry, a milestone that automakers and grid utilities have awaited for years.
The companies claim their manufacturing routes eliminate the need for expensive pressure fixtures that have hampered earlier designs.
The manufacturing question
Solid-state cells replace the flammable liquid electrolyte with a ceramic or polymer solid. The engineering challenge has always been scale: producing defect-free layers at automotive volumes.
Several pilot lines now operate in semi-dry rooms, a compromise that lowers capital cost while maintaining quality, executives said.
Cost trajectory
Analysts modeling the pilot data see pack-level costs approaching parity with premium lithium-ion by late decade if yield rates hold above 90 percent.
The energy-density advantage could cut battery weight by a third, reshaping vehicle range and freight economics.
