A redesigned architecture for returning Martian rock samples to Earth passed a critical system-design review this week, clearing the way for the final assembly phase of the multi-agency mission.
The review validated the new lighter lander design and its capture-and-orbit strategy for the sample container.
Why the redesign
The original architecture carried higher mass and cost than budgets allowed. Engineers replaced a single large lander with a smaller vehicle and moved the sample-collection rendezvous into orbit around Mars.
What the samples are
The tubes awaiting return include material from ancient lakebed deposits that planetary scientists believe could preserve evidence of past microbial life. Returned cores would be analyzed in laboratories for the first time in decades.
"These samples are the highest-priority scientific target in planetary exploration," the mission scientist said.
